Will there be a Christmas? A plot to cancel Christmas unfolds as theatergoers view Bogwig’s (King of the evil trolls) plans to kidnap Santa so there won’t be Christmas toys for good little girls and boys. Will his plans succeed? A note stuck on Santa’s door says, "Cancel Christmas or else..." What will Santa do? Lured to the great ice caves of the North Pole, Santa faces Bogwig. Later, his glowing reindeer, Flasher, brings a rescue team of Santa’s elves and wooden soldiers. This wonderfully warm musical play for children of all ages is a collaboration of Ukiah Civic Light Opera (UCLO) and Ukiah Players Theatre (UPT) with over 30 cast members. The show has a four-week run: November 19-December 13, 2009 at Ukiah Players Theatre. Show times are Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Mendocino Book Co. and at UPT’s box office (phone number is 707/ 462-9226. UPT’s business office number is 462-1210). Music and lyrics are by Paula Samonte and Sam Younghans. Les Pfutzenreuter and Paula Samonte are co-directing. The book by Sam Younghans, "Cancel Christmas" is available at Mendocino Book Company. It’s an "easy read" with large print so children will enjoy reading the story for themselves. "I wrote this play in 1976," explained Younghans, "for my ‘Mini Players,’ a group of young drama students in my class at the Sebastiani Theater in Sonoma. The play is titled ‘Cancel Christmas,’ not because I want to cancel Christmas, but because a note pinned on Santa’s door said, ‘We have taken Mrs. Santa. If you want to see her again, cancel Christmas.' Signed, ‘Bogwig of the North.’ My daughter played Mrs. Santa the first year and a dancer and troll in the other years." The play has evolved over the years into a mini-musical and the book version is published by Pinnacle-Syatt Publications. Recently a screenplay was written and has been submitted by a Writer’s Guild Agent to Disney Studios and to Hallmark Studios. Receptacles will be in the lobby for theatergoers to drop off canned food donations for Plowshares. may SEEM like a long way away, but this show may sell out early.
